Nepal became a secular federal republic on 28th May 2008. Before that, it was known as the Kingdom of Nepal, ruled by the Shah dynasty. Interestingly, Upper Mustang still retains elements of a monarchial system within its territory, which is why it is famously called the “Forbidden Kingdom” of Nepal.
Trekking in Upper Mustang offers a truly unique experience, showcasing a striking contrast of landscapes, cultures, and traditions. From the vast Himalayan desert and ancient cave dwellings to the final village near the border with China, every step reveals something extraordinary. The Upper Mustang Trek is not just a walk—it’s a journey through time, culture, and nature, enriched by stunning views of the mountains.
This region holds deep mythological and natural importance and falls under Nepal’s restricted trekking zones. In the past, foreigners were completely barred from entering. Today, however, access is possible—but only with a special permit, and trekkers must meet certain requirements to explore this remote and culturally rich destination.
