Himlung Expedition

31 Days 30 Nights

The Himlung Himal Expedition is a remarkable high-altitude adventure located in the remote region between Annapurna and Manaslu, near the Nepal-Tibet border. The journey follows the classic Annapurna Circuit route up to Koto, and then heads toward the isolated Nar and Phu villages—ancient Tibetan settlements full of culture and scenic beauty. From there, the trail continues to Himlung Base Camp, where the climbing phase begins.

To reach the summit, climbers establish three high camps, gradually ascending in altitude to ensure proper acclimatization and safety. The entire expedition typically takes 31 to 35 days, starting and ending in Kathmandu. The best time for the Himlung climb is during the autumn season—September and October, when the weather is stable and views are clear.

Although Himlung (7,126m) remains one of Nepal’s less frequently climbed peaks, it is rapidly gaining popularity among mountaineers. First opened to climbers in 1992, only a few teams—including Japanese and French expeditions—have successfully summited it. The adventure begins with a 6-hour drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, marking the start of a truly remote and rewarding Himalayan expedition.

Overview

The Himlung Expedition lies close to the Tibetan border in the Manaslu region, east of the Annapurna range. The Nepal government opened the region in 1992. Expedition for Himlung Himal follows the Annapurna route to Koto and from Koto towards Nar–Phu gaon. The route passes through high peaks and passes, remote villages, narrow gullies, forests, rocks, springs, Gompas, and unique cultural settlements. Since the area is remote and untouched, very few tourists have visited the region.
