Manaslu Expedition

36 Days 35 Nights

Manaslu Expedition centers on the world’s 8th highest peak, standing at 8,163 meters above sea level. Located in the Mansiri Himal range within Nepal’s Gorkha District, Manaslu is also known as Mt. Kutung in Tibet and is often called the “Mountain of the Spirit.” It lies approximately 64 kilometers east of Mount Annapurna. The first successful ascent was made by climbers Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu on May 9, 1956. Although there were earlier attempts, Manaslu was officially opened for expeditions only in 1991.

Since the pioneering climb by H.W. Tilman, the Manaslu region has attracted experienced trekkers and mountaineers. Due to its remote location, the area remains relatively isolated, making rescue operations difficult and demanding. Only well-organized groups with skilled trekkers typically venture here.

Climbing Manaslu is technically more challenging compared to other 8000-meter peaks such as Cho Oyu and Shishapangma. The Base Camp sits at around 4,700 meters, and the mountain’s long ridges offer multiple routes to the summit. Of the six main routes, the southern approach is considered the most difficult, while the northeast face is the most frequently used. Each year, Seven Summit Treks organizes numerous expeditions to Manaslu, supporting climbers in their pursuit of this majestic peak.

Overview

Manaslu Expedition, standing at 8,163 meters (26,781 feet), is the eighth-highest mountain in the world and one of the revered “8000ers”—a group of fourteen peaks that exceed 8,000 meters in altitude.

Located in the Gorkha District of Nepal, Manaslu is part of the Manaslu Himal range within the Nepalese Himalayas. Its name, derived from the Sanskrit word “Manasa,” meaning “intellect” or “soul,” reflects the mountain’s majestic and spiritual presence.

First summited on May 9, 1956, by a Japanese expedition led by Toshio Imanishi and Gyalzen Norbu, Mount Manaslu has since become a popular destination for mountaineers seeking a less crowded but equally challenging alternative to Mount Everest.
